Introduction

With a remarkable 130-year legacy, the Falla family stands as one of Antigua's most established coffee farming families. Their history in coffee cultivation began in 1890 with a farm in the Antigua region. Driven by a passion for botany, Arturo Falla Cofiño managed this initial property. The family later became independent of the original farm by purchasing new land, which they named Finca El Tempixque. There, they established the San Miguel Mill, originally intended solely for processing their own harvests. The mill is located in a dramatic setting, nestled amongst the three active volcanoes: Agua, Fuego, and Acatenango.

How it Started

The family currently owns and operates two farms in the Antigua region, specifically near San Miguel Duenas: Finca El Tempixque and Finca La Tacita. In addition to coffee production, the family cultivates ornamental plants, including poinsettias and orchids. Over the years, the San Miguel Mill has expanded its role and begun sourcing and processing coffee from local smallholder producers through a program named “Entre Volcanes”, offering financial and technical support as well as health and social benefits.

Their Approach and Philosophy

San Miguel Coffees has evolved into a collaborative platform working with various coffee producers and associations throughout Guatemala, including Acatenango, Fraijanes, Oriente, Atitlan and Huehuetenango regions.
